among the ferns by the river that cuts the wood clean
and by the hideaways where strangers have seen vagabond scouts
there will be a boy who keeps secrets
for years he lived in our backyards
and frolicked with our children
through winter
and he's still alive
i've got him in barrels of hay
and in buckets of old rainwater
his smell is the crisp rings being burned
to neat ash in the settling light
and he still has so much to show us
try to be patient
had the first child survived i would not have tasted the sweet water of my first neighborhood
nor the towering leaf piles in october
what to speak of the blazing sun and cool grass
that grazed my shins
and the rocks where creepers dwelled
i would sleep by my window as the rain spat down on our cozy kingdoms
and when i listened carefully
i could hear laughing in the backyard
whistling broke true dawn at around 4:17 am
the ones who heard it were younger
than the birds who had circled the nest of crowns not fifteen times
before sleeping til noon
later on i was summoned to these cold boxes where i scratched my skin
under my nails
and inhaled the bones of men and women
i had never met
it was all risen and flowing through
the tents in the backyard, the flashlights left lonely in the basement, and in the dream house
where i always quickly turn the corner if you send for me
but my favorite shirt of all
is the messy kingdom filled with last kisses
skinned knees
rolling down a staircase
my eyewater was silenced by song

will you comfort me
when i'm not looking?
i wasn't lying
about how i suffer for you
the sun's disappearing
but i haven't darkened yet
i wasn't lying
about how i suffer for you
the kindness of nature
the cruelty it sometimes brings
and i wasn't lying
about how i suffer for you
a more perfect morning
and i'm rolling over again
